On Saturday, September 30, 2017, the St. Sophia Theological Seminary community, the staff of the Metropolia Center, and local clergy gathered to honor Rev. Dr. George and Presbytera Athanasia Papademetriou for their generous donation of several thousands of theological titles to the Seminary Library. Travelling with Rev. George and Presbytera Athanasia were members of his family—his sons and daughter, their spouses and grandchildren.

The event began with a Moleben served by His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, concelebrated by our guest of honor, Rev. George Papademetriou, as well as local clergy: Rev. Jakiw Norton, Rev. Oleh Hucul, Rev. Anthony Perkins, and Rev. Vasyl Pasakas. Responses were sung by the seminary student body. Following the Moleben, remarks were given by members of the Papademetriou family: Rev. George Papademetriou as well as his sons Tom and Dean who spoke about the family’s love and devotion to literature and learning through books, how St. Sophia Library was selected as a recipient of their extensive book collection, and read a letter of greetings from Metropolitan Methodios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.
Following the Moleben and remarks, Metropolitan Antony and Librarian Dobrodijka Oksana Pasakas presented Rev. George and Presbytera Athanasia a “Testament of Blessing” (Hramota)

for their kind and generous donation and their dedicated service to the Church. Dobrodijka Oksana offered her own acknowledgements and thank you to the family as well as to the Library staff for helping in processing the entire collection for immediate use by the students and patrons of the Library. Following these remarks, the entire family was warmly invited into the Library for the unveiling of the commemorative plaque marking the generous donation of the Rev. George C. Papademetriou Collection to the Library collection.

Before departing our Metropolia Center, the Papademetriou family toured the Library speaking with the Library staff,  viewed the new exhibit in the Ukrainian History and Education Library Gallery titled “Shepherding Ukrainian Orthodoxy in a New Land: The Metropolitans of the Church” before departing our Metropolia Center, and enjoyed refreshments catered by Elite Catering.

Both Rev. George and Presbytera Athanasia, immigrants to America from Greece, were members of the staff for many years at Hellenic College Holy Cross. Aside from his pastoral duties, Rev. George served as Director of the Library at Hellenic College/Holy Cross for over twenty years, where under his leadership, the library was transformed from a manual and outdated system to a computerized structure using the Library of Congress classification. Rev. George has authored many books and articles. Presbytera Athanasia, a teacher and librarian, served over twenty years as Assistant Director and Cataloging Librarian at Hellenic College/Holy Cross. Presbytera Athanasia is the author of Presbytera: the Life, Mission and Service of the Priest’s Wife.

A sincere thank you on behalf of St. Sophia Theological Seminary, the Library and the staff and administration of the Metropolia Center to Rev. George, Presbytera Athanasia and their entire family for their generous donation to the Library and for their devotion to the Church and seminaries here in America and abroad.
