With prayer, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the sacred work of theological education, St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA formally opened its 2026-2027 academic year, entering the 51st year of its ministry of theological formation and academic excellence.
For more than half a century, St. Sophia Seminary has sought to form not simply students of theology, but servants of Christ - future clergy, pastoral leaders, educators, and witnesses to the Orthodox Christian Faith. This sacred mission continues through the selfless dedication of the Seminary faculty, who offer their knowledge, experience, prayer, and pastoral wisdom in preparing future spiritual leaders for the parishes and ministries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and the broader Orthodox Church.
This year, the Seminary community is especially grateful to welcome students not only from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, but also a number of students representing various Orthodox jurisdictions associated with the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the United States of America and Canada. Their presence reflects the increasingly pan-Orthodox dimension of St. Sophia Seminary's academic ministry and its commitment to serving the theological and pastoral needs of Orthodox Christianity in North America.
Approximately 40 seminarians and theological students are studying at St. Sophia during the 2026–2027 academic year through the Seminary's graduate theological programs, including the Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Orthodox Theology, with students pursuing both full-time and part-time tracks.
With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Rector of St. Sophia Seminary and Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, in his capacity as Academic Dean of the Seminary, presided over the Eucharistic celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Three Holy Hierarchs Chapel of St. Sophia Seminary.
As the Archpastor entered the sacred space of the Seminary, he was greeted by Subdeacon Yurii Iznyk and Reader Bohdan Bodnar. Their words of welcome carried a particularly moving personal meaning. They reflected upon the day when they themselves first arrived in the United States of America and were welcomed by their Archpastor. Now, as seminarians and spiritual children of the Church, they stood at the doors of their Seminary chapel to welcome Archbishop Daniel and invite him to lead their academic family in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
The moment beautifully expressed the very nature of theological formation: those who are first welcomed, cared for, taught, and formed eventually learn to welcome and serve others.
The chapel was filled not only with seminarians and faculty members, but also clergy and faithful who traveled from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and surrounding areas. Their presence offered a visible expression of the relationship that exists between the Seminary and the parishes of the Church. Theological education does not exist apart from the Church; it grows from the Church's Eucharistic life and ultimately returns its fruits to the people of God.
Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, Dean of Students, formally welcomed Archbishop Daniel on behalf of the student body, asking for his continued archpastoral prayers for the Seminary, its faculty, and its students. He expressed gratitude for the Archbishop's leadership and for the work accomplished during recent years in strengthening the academic and spiritual life of St. Sophia Seminary.
Archbishop Daniel, in turn, thanked Fr. Vasyl for his dedication to the seminarians and acknowledged the daily care provided to the student body by the Seminary administration and staff, including those who accompany the students through the practical, spiritual, and personal dimensions of seminary life.
Prior to the beginning of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel blessed several new full-time and part-time seminarians who had begun their theological studies at St. Sophia Seminary to wear the ecclesiastical cassock. The blessing was not presented as an honor or distinction, but as a visible reminder of humility, obedience, discipline, and self-offering.
The black garment of the seminarian is meant to remind the student that theological education is ultimately not about personal advancement. It is preparation for service - a willingness to decrease so that Christ may increase, and to place one's gifts, education, talents, and eventually one's entire life at the service of Christ and His Church.
Throughout the Divine Liturgy, sacred responses were offered by members of the Seminary community. Under the guidance of the Seminary's instructor in sacred music – Rev. Fr. Roman Marchyshak, seminarians joined their voices in prayer, demonstrating that theology at St. Sophia is learned not only in classrooms and books but also before the Holy Altar.
During the Divine Liturgy, Protopresbyter Stephen Hutnick, with the blessing of Archbishop Daniel, delivered the homily, reflecting upon the appointed Gospel reading and the liturgical commemoration associated with the Leave-taking of the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Birth-Giver of God.
At the heart of his reflection was one word: choice.
The Christian life is filled with moments in which a person must decide whether to follow Christ, whether to trust Him, and whether to surrender personal expectations to the will of God.
Fr. Stephen invited the seminarians to contemplate the example of the Most Holy Theotokos. The entire course of her earthly life was shaped by her willingness to say “yes” to God.
Her words at the Annunciation - “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” - were not simply a response spoken once. They became the pattern of her entire life.
“Mary's ‘yes’ was not a momentary answer,” Fr. Stephen reflected. “It became the orientation of her whole life. Her yes was repeated in trust, obedience, sacrifice, suffering, and ultimately in her unwavering faithfulness to her Son.”
Addressing the seminarians, he reminded them that theological education requires a similar response.
“You have entered these doors because somewhere within your heart you have already said yes. But the question before you is whether you will continue saying yes - when the studies become difficult, when obedience challenges you, when ministry demands sacrifice, and when God asks something of you that you did not originally imagine.”
The pursuit of academic excellence, therefore, cannot be separated from spiritual formation.
Theology is not merely information about God. Authentic Orthodox theological education must lead the student toward communion with God and toward greater love for His people. Intellectual discipline, prayer, liturgical participation, pastoral formation, and personal sacrifice must become parts of one integrated response to Christ.
The Mother of God remains the supreme human example of such integration. Her knowledge of God was inseparable from her relationship with God; her faith became obedience, her obedience became service, and her service became self-offering.
A large number of faithful and the entire Seminary student body approached the Holy Chalice to receive the Most Holy Eucharist, offering the most profound possible beginning to another year of theological study.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel welcomed everyone to the Seminary chapel and expressed his gratitude to the clergy, faculty, seminarians, parishioners, friends, and benefactors who continue to support St. Sophia Seminary.
Particular words of appreciation were offered to the Seminary faculty.
“Our professors do far more than teach courses,” Archbishop Daniel stated. “They offer a portion of themselves. They bring into the classroom years of prayer, pastoral experience, scholarship, struggle, ministry, and love for Christ's Church. Such an offering cannot be measured simply in academic credits or classroom hours.”
Speaking directly to the seminarians, the Archbishop reminded them that the sacrifices made on their behalf carry with them a sacred responsibility.
“Someone is praying for you. Someone is teaching you. Someone is financially supporting this Seminary. Someone in a parish you may not yet know is waiting for you. Somewhere there is a child who will need you to explain the Faith, a family that will need you in a moment of crisis, an elderly person who will wait for you to bring the Holy Mysteries, and a soul searching for Christ who may encounter Him through your ministry.”
He continued: “Therefore, do not waste the opportunity God has placed before you. Study seriously. Pray sincerely. Learn to listen. Learn to serve. Allow yourselves to be formed. The Church does not need people who simply possess theological information. She needs servants whose knowledge has passed through the heart and become love.”
The Archbishop also thanked the faithful who regularly visit the Seminary, assist its students, contribute financially, prepare meals, participate in worship, and remind seminarians that they are surrounded by the prayers of the entire Church.
“Every act of generosity toward this Seminary is ultimately an investment in the future pastoral life of the Church. You may never know the parishioner who will someday be comforted by one of these seminarians, or the child who will be baptized by them, or the person who will return to Christ because one of them took the time to listen. Yet through your sacrifice, you become part of that ministry.”
The opening of the 2026–2027 academic year carries particular significance because St. Sophia Seminary now enters its 51st year of theological education and formation.
Having celebrated a half-century of service, the Seminary now steps across the threshold into a new chapter.
The first fifty years represent a legacy entrusted to the present generation. The next fifty years represent a responsibility.
The challenges confronting Orthodox clergy and Church leaders today are increasingly complex. Future pastors must be rooted firmly in Holy Scripture, Orthodox doctrine, liturgical life, patristic tradition, canonical order, pastoral theology, and spiritual discipline, while also being prepared to encounter people facing the realities of contemporary society.
Yet the essential vocation remains unchanged: to know Christ, to love Christ, and to bring Christ to His people.
For this reason, the beginning of another academic year is much more than the opening of classrooms. It is the continuation of a sacred chain of service stretching from one generation to another.
Professors teach because others once taught them. Priests serve because others once served them. Seminarians are formed so that they may one day help form others. And the Church continues her mission because generation after generation of Christians responds, like the Most Holy Theotokos: “Yes, Lord. Let it be according to Your will.”
Following the Divine Liturgy, the Seminary community gathered for the traditional photograph commemorating the beginning of the new academic year.
The celebration then continued with a festive luncheon lovingly prepared for the seminarians, faculty, clergy, and guests, providing an opportunity for fellowship and for members of the broader Church community to become better acquainted with the students and the academic and spiritual life of St. Sophia Seminary.
As St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary begins the 2026–2027 academic year and enters its 51st year of service, its doors remain open to those seeking serious Orthodox theological formation, while its faculty, administration, students, alumni, benefactors, and friends continue together the sacred work entrusted to this institution more than half a century ago.
May Christ, the Divine Wisdom and Teacher of all, bless the students and faculty of St. Sophia Seminary.
May the Most Holy Birth-Giver of God protect them beneath her sacred veil.
And may the Three Holy Hierarchs - St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. John Chrysostom - guide all who study and teach within these walls, so that knowledge may always become wisdom, wisdom may become service, and service may lead souls to Christ.
(Master of Arts in Applied Orthodox Studies) - як за повною, так і за частковою формою навчання.
