February 8 - the Sunday of the Prodigal Son - marked a deeply meaningful moment in the Church’s spiritual journey toward Great Lent. This preparatory Sunday calls the faithful to reflection, repentance, and a renewed awareness of God’s boundless mercy. The Orthodox Church, in her pastoral wisdom, begins guiding hearts weeks in advance, gently turning minds away from worldly distractions and toward a life centered on prayer, humility, and love for neighbor.

It was within this sacred context that the Saint Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary chapter of the Ukrainian Orthodox League organized the charitable outreach initiative known as “SOUPer Bowl Sunday.” What unfolded that day was far more than a fundraiser - it was a living expression of faith, fellowship, and service.

Following the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony entered the Pokrova Sisterhood Hall accompanied by the parish priest, Fr. Vasyl Pasakas and Dobr. Oksana; Protodeacon Pavlo Vysotskyi with Dobr. Valentyna; and Deacon Andrii Akulenko with Dobr. Alexis. The gathering began prayerfully. Metropolitan Anthony offered a blessing over the food and over all present, reminding everyone that acts of charity are themselves sacred offerings pleasing to God.

As the prayer concluded, the hall came alive with warmth and joyful anticipation. Tables were filled with steaming pots and containers of freshly prepared soups, festive kanapky, homemade desserts, coffee, and warm beverages. The comforting aromas created an atmosphere that felt both celebratory and deeply communal.

Rather than rushing through the event, parishioners chose to sit together in the hall, sharing meals, stories, and laughter. Conversations flowed easily. Old friends reunited, families gathered, and seminarians mingled with parishioners. The scene reflected the beauty of Orthodox community life - fellowship nourished not only by food, but by shared faith and mutual care.

The spiritual meaning of the Prodigal Son Sunday resonated throughout the gathering. Just as the Gospel speaks of return and reconciliation, the day became an embodiment of generosity - hearts opening not only toward God, but toward those in need.

Informational posters displayed how the Church transforms donations into concrete assistance through the soup kitchen ministry of the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Society. Brochures allowed participants to learn more about how their contributions would provide meals, dignity, and hope to countless individuals facing hardship.

Only after enjoying time together did many parishioners begin selecting soups to take home. Containers were carefully filled - some purchased multiple portions to share with family and friends. Particularly moving was the sight of people intentionally preparing meals for elderly parishioners unable to attend that day. In this simple act, the Gospel command to love one another was lived out in a tangible and heartfelt way.

Days of preparation had made the event possible. Seminarians, clergy families, and parish volunteers worked tirelessly - chopping vegetables, stirring pots, reviving cherished family recipes, and experimenting with new flavors. Their efforts resulted in a remarkable variety of soups prepared with love: Solyanka by Dobr. Olena Shak; Cheese soup by Struk Vitaliia;

Mushroom soup by Dobr. Valentyna Dovban (Vysotskyi); Zakarpattian borscht by Olena Shtelen; Borscht with pampushky by Svitlana Morozovskyi; Pasta fagioli by Dobr. Oksana Pasakas; Hot and Sour soup by the seminarians; Chili by Natalia Lischuk; and Pea soup by Tanya Bobko.

The festive table was beautifully completed by traditional wedding-style kanapky and homemade desserts, lovingly prepared by dedicated parish volunteers. The kanapky were crafted by Dobr. Alexis Akulenko, Dobr. Oksana Pasakas, Dobr. Valya Dovban, Anna Krykh, and Svitlana Morozovsky, while sweet desserts were generously provided by Vira Gorbach, Maria Wasyliw, and Dobr. Oksana Pasakas. Together, their offerings added warmth, beauty, and joy to the gathering - a reminder that even simple acts of generosity become blessings when shared in love.

As the event drew to a close, Metropolitan Anthony and Fr. Vasyl Pasakas addressed the gathering with words of gratitude. They thanked everyone for their generosity and announced the joyful result - over $1,000 raised to support the Church’s soup kitchen ministry.

Reflecting on the day, Metropolitan Anthony remarked: “We often spend generously when dining out without much thought. Today, each person offered what they could - and together we accomplished something far greater. This generosity will nourish thousands. This is the Church alive - loving, serving, and bringing hope.”The faithful departed with full hands and uplifted hearts - strengthened by fellowship, inspired by service, and reminded that true preparation for Lent begins with mercy and love.

As Great Lent approaches, this gathering stands as a powerful testimony that repentance blossoms into generosity, and faith becomes visible through compassionate action.

May our Lord Jesus Christ bless all who served, gave, and participated, and guide us to continue doing works pleasing in His sight.

8 лютого - у Неділю про Блудного сина - стало глибоко духовним кроком у підготовці до Великого посту. Ця неділя закликає вірних до покаяння, роздумів і усвідомлення безмежної Божої милості. Православна Церква завчасно готує своїх дітей до посту, поступово відвертаючи їхні серця від суєти та спрямовуючи до молитви, смирення й любові до ближнього.

У цьому духовному контексті осередок Української Православної Ліги при Свято-Софійській духовній семінарії організував благодійну ініціативу “SOUPer Bowl Sunday”. Цей день став не просто збором коштів, а живим свідченням віри, єдності та служіння.

Після Божественної Літургії Його Високопреосвященство Митрополит Антоній увійшов до залу сестрицтва Покрови разом із настоятелем храму отцем Василем Пасакасом та його Добродійкою Оксаною, Протодияконом Павлом Висоцьким і Добродійкою Валентиною і Дияконом Андрієм Акуленком і Добродійкою Алексіс. Захід розпочався молитвою. Владика благословив їжу та всіх присутніх, підкресливши, що діла милосердя є духовними дарами, приємними Богові.

Після молитви зала ожила радістю й теплом. Столи були наповнені запашними супами, святковими канапками, домашніми десертами, кавою й гарячими напоями. Атмосфера була одночасно святковою й сімейною.

Парафіяни не поспішали - вони сідали разом, куштували страви, спілкувалися й раділи зустрічі. Лунали розмови, сміх, щирі привітання. Це була справжня картина церковної спільноти - єдність, яка живиться не лише їжею, але й любов’ю та взаємною підтримкою.

Духовний зміст Неділі про блудного сина відчувався в усьому - нагадування, що повернення до Бога нерозривно пов’язане з милосердям до ближніх.

Інформаційні постери показували, як пожертви перетворюються на реальну допомогу нужденним через служіння благодійних кухонь Товариства святого Андрія. Брошури дозволяли кожному дізнатися більше про цю місію.

Лише після спільного перебування й насолоди атмосферою люди почали брати супи додому. Контейнери наповнювалися для родин і друзів. Особливо зворушливо було бачити, як парафіяни брали порції для стареньких, які не могли бути присутні. У цьому простому жесті проявилася справжня християнська любов.

Цьому дню передувала велика підготовка. Семінаристи, родини духовенства й парафіяни невтомно працювали, готуючи різноманітні страви: Солянку - Добродійка Олена Шак; Сирний суп - Віталія Струк; Грибну юшку - Добродійка Валентина Довбан (Висоцька); Закарпатський борщ - Олена Штелен; Борщ із пампушками - Світлана Морозовська; Pasta fagioli - Добродійка Оксана Пасакас; Гостро-кислий суп - семінаристи; Чілі - Наталія Ліщук; Гороховий суп - Таня Бобко.

Святковий стіл гармонійно доповнили традиційні весільні канапки та домашні десерти, приготовлені з любов’ю парафіянами. Канапки приготували Добродійка АлексісАкуленко, Добродійка Оксана Пасакас, Добродійка Валентина Довбан, Анна Крих і Світлана Морозовська, а солодкі десерти приготували Віра Горбач, Марія Василів і Добродійка Оксана Пасакас. Їхні дари додали події тепла, краси й радості, нагадуючи, що навіть прості прояви щедрості стають благословенням, коли вони поділені з любов’ю.

Наприкінці Митрополит Антоній та отець Василь Пасакас подякували всім присутнім і оголосили радісний підсумок - понад $1,000 було зібрано для благодійних кухонь.

Владика сказав: «Ми часто залишаємо великі кошти в ресторанах, не задумуючись. Сьогодні кожен пожертвував стільки, скільки міг - і разом ми звершили велику місію. Ці пожертви стануть їжею й надією для тисяч людей. Саме так живе Церква.»

Вірні розходилися духовно укріпленими, усвідомлюючи, що підготовка до посту починається з любові. Нехай Господь благословить усіх учасників цього служіння.
