St. Sophia Seminary Restoration Project

During the last two weeks of Great Lent, St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Bound Brook, NJ entered into the last stages of a slow recovery from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, following the immediate full restoration of electricity and heat, as well as repairs being made to the exterior of the Seminary’s building.

As it was reported in the news media, and most residents of the East coast of the United States of America had experienced, Hurricane Sandy made landfall on Monday evening, October 29, 2012. Sustained winds of 70-90 miles per hour, rain, and a devastating storm surge left millions of Americans without power, including the community of faculty, staff, and students at St. Sophia's Seminary.

Throughout the challenging months of difficult repairs, the St. Sophia's community found ways to cope and help one another. The Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA approved immediate repairs to the main building, namely, -  the siding on the building was replaced, the entire front porch is being repaired, - and that is in addition to about 50 trees that were removed from the campus of the Seminary, as well as the UOC of the USA’s Metropolia Center.

His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Rector of the Seminary and His Grace Bishop Daniel, President of the Consistory of the UOC of the USA, meeting with the Property Manger of the Metropolia Center Mr. Emil Skocypec and the Team of workers on the Seminary grounds, shared their realization that “…for many individuals on the East Coast, the after effects of Hurricane Sandy are still a part of their day-to-day lives. We know of staff, faculty, and students alike who continue to operate in the conditions of their homes and the Seminary offices that were damaged. Realizing that, we are also grateful for the restoration work. Thank you for doing your best to get the Seminary building repaired and ready for the spring/summer season. Thank you for continuing to plug away at the work that must get done in order to keep St. Sophia Seminary operating, regardless of what is happening outside our walls.”

The Seminary community appeals to various Central Church organizations, parishes and individuals, as well as greater Ukrainian-American community for assistance with the final stages of recovery in aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
